How focusing on the details can help you identify the truth with up to 80% accuracy
Have you ever wondered how to determine whether someone is telling the truth or lying? Numerous studies have delved into this subject, identifying a plethora of signals that could potentially expose a liar. In the wake of the 9/11 attacks, airport security personnel were even trained to detect deception through body language. However, with 92 possible indicators to consider, lie detection can seem overwhelming, especially when time is of the essence. Thankfully, a recent study published in Nature Human Behavior introduces a new “heuristic” approach that simplifies the process, boasting an impressive 80% accuracy rate.
Developed by Bruno Verschuere, an associate professor of forensic psychology at the University of Amsterdam, and his team, the heuristic method focuses solely on the details within a person’s story. By disregarding other factors and honing in on the specificity of a subject’s narrative, this empirical rule simplifies complex decisions.
According to the researchers, truth-tellers can provide detailed descriptions of events because they’ve actually experienced them. Liars may also offer details, but they risk being caught in the process. The team conducted nine studies involving 1,445 participants, who were asked to assess the accuracy of various statements, video transcripts, and interviews about students’ activities at the University of Amsterdam. The students were divided into two groups: “guilty” individuals tasked with stealing an item, and “innocent” individuals who spent time on campus, visited the library, had coffee, and called a friend.
Participants in the studies evaluated the students’ accounts based on signals they deemed appropriate, such as eye movement or emotion. However, this approach made it difficult to distinguish lies from truths. When participants focused on the amount of detail in the story and the perceived completeness, concreteness, and surprise of the account, they identified lies with an accuracy of 59-79%.
The study’s results validate the heuristic method as a more effective way to detect deception. If an individual can provide detailed descriptions of who, what, when, where, and why, they’re likely telling the truth. Conversely, those who gloss over these specifics may be lying. By concentrating on this single signal, lie detection becomes more manageable and accurate.
