In 1761, the legendary ghost ship, the Octavius, set sail from London to China, embarking on a daring journey to traverse the treacherous Northwest Passage – a route connecting the Pacific and Atlantic oceans through the Bering Strait, rugged coastlines of North America, and southern coasts of Greenland. After completing its trade in China, the ill-fated schooner vanished in the summer of 1762, only to be rediscovered by Captain Warren aboard the Greenland whaler Herald on October 11, 1775.
The Octavius was found in a dire state with tattered sails and a damaged hull[1]. Inside, Captain Warren’s crew discovered 28 frostbitten sailors in their bunks, and four frozen solid, including the captain who was found clutching a pen, ready to update the logbook[1]. The final entry, dated November 11, 1762, revealed that the ship had been trapped in ice for 17 days, approximately 2,000 miles from its eventual discovery. Overcome with fear, the Herald’s crew left the Octavius adrift, and it has never been seen again.
