NASA is exploring the potential use of lasers, both on the ground and in space, to reduce the amount of space junk orbiting the Earth. It is thought that there are currently around 100 trillion pieces of debris in orbit, which pose a danger to satellites. Other methods, such as space tugs, have also been suggested.
According to NASA, it is important to clean up space debris as it can cause significant harm to orbiting satellites and spaceworthy vessels. The agency estimates that each time 100,000 pieces of debris, which range from 1 to 10 centimeters, are cleared, approximately $23 million in damage would be avoided.
In their 147-page report, NASA weighed up several options but did not indicate which one was their favorite. They did, however, make it clear that they prefer ground- or space-based lasers for smaller-scale projects.
