A celestial owl suspended in the darkness of space

Positioned in the Ursa Major constellation, approximately 2000 light years away from our home planet, lies the cosmic marvel – the Owl Nebula. As one of the most expansive planetary nebulae known to date, this celestial body boasts an impressive diameter exceeding three light years. By merging this information with the gas expansion rate, scientists have estimated its age to be around 8000 years.

Despite its impressive size, observing the Owl Nebula is no easy task. The gases composing it are incredibly rarefied, rendering its surface brightness exceptionally low. However, thanks to the high-precision false color image captured by the Liverpool Telescope, we can delve into the intricacies of this nebula’s structure.

At a basic level, the nebula can be visualized as two concentric shells. The innermost shell exhibits a blue hue, while the outermost, thinner shell glows red. Intriguingly, within the first shell, two symmetrical areas stand out due to their darker blue shade. These regions, darker due to lower gas density, have contributed to the nebula’s unique name – the Owl.

When viewed through a telescope, the nebula appears as a uniformly bright sphere, punctuated by two darker areas.
