It has been over twenty years since we had received such a close-up image of the surface of Ganymede, Jupiter’s largest moon!
The photo was taken by the Juno probe last June 7th, when it flew over the surface of the satellite at a distance of only 1000 km. The last time a probe passed this close to Ganymede was in 2000, at the time of the Galileo probe mission.
This image is only preliminary: NASA scientists are in fact analyzing all the data obtained by the spacecraft during the flyby and in the coming days there will be even more beautiful images than this!
The probe takes images in three different filters (red, blue and green) and only by combining the data it is possible to have a color image. This photo appears in black and white precisely for this reason: it was obtained through the green filter only, while the images in blue and red are still missing.
