The deepest reason we doubt science is the way science talks about itself — and learning to tell honest doubt from manufactured fog can save lives.
Science wears a mask of certainty.
That mask is the real reason so many people stop trusting it. Strip it away and something gentler shows up — a human practice that argues with itself, changes its mind, and somehow survives its own mistakes. (A quick promise before we go on: I’ll simplify the hard physics so we can all keep pace, and I’ll flag every spot where I’ve done it.)
I’m writing from Rimini, the Adriatic throwing salt against the window screens, gulls complaining over the lungomare. The heat this week has been merciless — and I keep circling one question. Why do some people answer that heat with denial?
Let’s braid two threads together, one philosophical and one painfully current, and see what knot they make.
Why the Monolith Feels Like a Lie
The deepest source of distrust toward science is the way science presents itself as a single block of indisputable results. A pebble falls by the law of gravity — fine, we hold direct experimental proof of that. But most of science isn’t pebbles.
Most of science is theories. Each one carries its own notions, principles and mathematical techniques, and each rests on philosophical ideas — the very idea of infinity, for one. Carve all of that from one stone and you’ve already bent the truth.
Here’s the part the textbooks rarely admit out loud.
Science has lived through deep crises — the early twentieth century nearly broke it — and has backed flatly wrong ideas, the luminiferous ether being the famous corpse in the cupboard. It also runs on methods that don’t agree with one another; Newtonian mechanics and chemistry simply don’t think the same way. None of that fits the pose of being rationality itself.
One Science, Many Mathematics
We’re told science speaks a single mathematical language. It doesn’t.
Plenty of theories — thermodynamics, the theory of computation, the genetic code — chose discrete or constructive mathematics instead of the infinitesimal analysis that leans on actual infinity (as though handling infinity were a tidy human skill with no strings attached). So a single concept quietly splits in two, depending on which mathematics you reach for. A number is finite, or it’s infinitesimal. A line is a segment you keep extending, or it’s a thing that swallows its own endpoints out at infinity. A set holds a finite count of elements, or an endless one.
Same words. Two different worlds.
That’s not a footnote — that’s a fork in the road, and most of us never get told the road forked.
One Science, Many Logics
The deductive dream is even more seductive. Derive every law from a handful of axioms, the way Euclid did with geometry and Newton did with motion, all blessed by Aristotle’s old authority. Beautiful. Mostly false.
Whole fields — thermodynamics, information theory, computer science — were built instead to hunt down a fresh method for cracking one stubborn problem. They lean on double-negation statements that refuse to collapse into plain positives. In thermodynamics, “it’s not true that heat is not work” is not the same claim as “heat is work” — and that little gap is where intuitionist logic breathes. (Simplifying hard here: the double negative carries information a flat positive throws straight in the bin.)
So there isn’t one logic. There are many — classical, modal, intuitionist. Back in 1936, Birkhoff and von Neumann showed that the logic of quantum theory itself isn’t classical at all.
Even Newton’s celebrated first principle hides a soft underbelly. Drago notes it reads less like an operating instruction and more like metaphysics — a tautology, even. Lazare Carnot offered an honest, workable version instead: a body once set moving can’t, on its own, change its direction or its speed.
The Mythic Pose
Pull it together and science did make two real choices — the mathematics of actual infinity, and the classical logic that governs its tidy deductive architecture. Nothing wrong with those choices in themselves.
The damage starts when every other choice gets waved away as quaint, outdated, not “real” science. That’s the arrogance. That’s the moment science stops being a method and starts wearing the costume of a myth — one that philosophers and ordinary people alike have struggled to see through.
The historian Edwin Burtt caught the irony a century ago. Scientists dodged metaphysics wherever they could, and where they couldn’t — in the calculus, in Newton’s mechanics — they turned it into one more instrument for conquering the world with numbers.
Had science said from the start, “we made choices, and here are the roads we didn’t take,” far fewer people would feel lied to. Honesty is cheaper than authority, and it ages a great deal better.
Tomorrow’s trust depends on that admission being made out loud.
So Is All This Doubt a Good Thing?
Now the thread turns sharp, because doubt wears two faces.
One face is the philosopher’s. It keeps the books honest, remembers the ether, asks which mathematics and which logic we happen to be standing on. That doubt is oxygen; without it, science calcifies into the very monolith Drago warns us about.
The other face is uglier, and I watched it kill people this month.
Healthy doubt is why we still publish hard questions — like asking whether the shrinking Caspian Sea is really climate’s fault, or whether spacetime itself is made of matter. Good science never stops poking its own assumptions. The trouble begins when poking turns into plugging your ears.
When Doubt Becomes a Weapon
The Sun Has an Alibi
Let me simplify the climate physics in thirty seconds, because it earns every one of them. If the Sun were roasting us, every layer of the atmosphere would warm together, top to bottom. Instead the surface warms while the stratosphere cools — and that split is the fingerprint of greenhouse gases, not of solar forcing.
The Sun’s measured output hasn’t even climbed since satellites started watching in 1978, while temperatures kept marching upward. The numbers point one way only.
The Sun, as I wrote the other day, has a rock-solid alibi.
Why More Knowledge Can Mean More Denial
And still, millions reach for the Sun anyway. Why pick the story where we’re helpless?
Because helplessness is comfortable. If nobody can fix it, then nobody has to lift a finger.
Now here’s the finding that should unsettle every science communicator alive. In 2012, Yale’s Dan Kahan published a study in Nature Climate Change with a blunt title — the polarising impact of science literacy on perceived climate risk. The people who scored highest on scientific literacy and numeracy weren’t the most worried about warming; they were the most culturally split over it.
Read that twice. More knowledge, more division — not less.
Kahan’s explanation cuts to the bone. For many people, a position on climate isn’t a claim about carbon at all. It’s a quiet conflict of interest between the truth and the dinner table — between believing what the evidence says and keeping the trust of the people you sit beside every night. The brain, faced with that choice, often protects the friendship and sacrifices the fact.
That’s not scepticism about science. That’s tribal loyalty wearing a borrowed lab coat.
The Fog Was Manufactured
Here’s where my two threads finally tie together. Drago shows that real uncertainty lives inside science’s foundations. The denial industry took that legitimate humility and counterfeited it.
The cleverest move the denial machine ever made wasn’t inventing a rival theory. It was selling fog. And the paper trail on that fog is now embarrassingly long.
As far back as 1954, the American oil and gas industry was funding the very research — Charles David Keeling’s early carbon measurements — that underpins our modern understanding of warming. In 1959, a Shell paper titled “The Earth’s Carbon Cycle” conceded that burning fossil fuels could change the climate. Exxon’s own scientists reached the same conclusion by the late 1970s.
The disinformation expert Geoffrey Supran put the parallel plainly: big oil ran the tobacco industry’s doubt-manufacturing playbook, and started running it just as early. So the “uncertainty” you hear on loop wasn’t discovered at a lab bench. It was drafted in a marketing meeting and kept on life support for half a century.
That’s the cruel sleight of hand. Honest doubt asks, “which logic, which mathematics?” Manufactured doubt asks, “who really knows anything?” — and then quietly hands you a petrol receipt.
The key tell: honest doubt narrows the question until it’s answerable. Manufactured doubt widens it until you give up. One keeps reason awake. The other sells you a reason to sleep.
The Body Count Behind the Argument
This stopped being abstract this week, and I won’t dress it up.
The World Health Organization confirmed more than 1,300 excess deaths across Europe in a single heatwave since 21 June. Tedros, the WHO’s director-general, called the heat the “silent killer” and warned that European homes, workplaces and schools were never built for these temperatures.
France took the heaviest blow. Public Health France logged more than 1,200 deaths on the hottest Wednesday and over 1,400 on each of the two days that followed, against a normal baseline of roughly 900 to 1,000 a day. The agency’s grim summary: around 1,000 excess deaths in three days, and 85% of them people aged 65 and over — grandparents, gone quietly in their own flats. Spain’s monitoring system linked more than 400 deaths to the heat in a matter of days.
At the peak, roughly 191 million Europeans were forecast to endure 35°C or more on a single day. The UK recorded its hottest June day on record at Santon Downham in Suffolk (37.3°C); the Czech Republic touched 41.1°C at Doksany, the first time its official network had ever seen 41 degrees.
And No, This Isn’t Just Weather
The mechanics had a name — an “omega block,” a stalled pattern that trapped a dome of hot air over the continent for days. That’s the trigger. The loaded gun is something else.
The scientists at World Weather Attribution ran a rapid analysis and reached a verdict with no hedging in it: a June heat event like this one would have been “virtually impossible” in 1976 without human-caused climate change. The “once-in-a-generation” heatwave our grandparents saw once now visits nearly every summer, like a guest who kills on his way out the door.
When honest scepticism and manufactured doubt get blurred together — often deliberately, by policy and by industry — real people pay the bill in body heat and cardiac arrests. The grandmother in the room matters more than the spectacle in the street.
Holding Both Truths at Once
Here’s the balance I keep trying to walk, wheelchair and all.
Science is not a monolith — Drago is right, and pretending otherwise is exactly what breeds the distrust in the first place. Science is also, on the climate question, settled enough to bore a physicist over his morning espresso. Both sentences are true, and only a lazy mind needs them to fight.
The cure for arrogant science isn’t denial. It’s honest science — the kind that admits its plural foundations, names plainly what it actually knows, and tells you precisely where the simplification ends.
We even keep a piece on the Moon-landing “debate” for this exact reason: scepticism stays healthy until it ignores the proof sitting right in front of it.
Keep the Mind Awake
Goya warned that the sleep of reason breeds monsters, and this summer I’ve seen the litter they leave behind.
The honest reader’s job is small and brutally hard. Ask which mathematics, which logic, which choice got made — and in the same breath, ask who profits when you’re told that nothing is knowable. Hold the philosopher’s doubt in one hand and the thermometer in the other, and refuse to let either one drop.
Where does this leave us tomorrow? With more heatwaves, almost certainly, and a public more tempted than ever to throw up its hands. Our work — yours and mine — is to keep reason awake while the world keeps trying to rock it to sleep.
Thirteen hundred people didn’t die from an angry Sun or a vengeful planet. They died from a cause with a name and a balance sheet — and a human cause always means a human cure.
So I’ll say the part that’s mine to say.
Never give up. Doubt honestly, name what’s true, and protect the grandmother before the spectacle.
Science is the brightest tool we hold for human and cultural growth. Use it kindly.
