What do orbiters see when they look down?
NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter — LRO for short — has mapped the entire Moon in fine detail since 2009. Its camera spots the old landing sites. It spots the leftover hardware. No mystery, no smoke and mirrors.

The Moon has no wind and no rain to sweep it clean. So the footprints and the discarded equipment sit there, frozen, like a museum nobody dusts. Can you really bounce a laser off the Moon?
Every Apollo flight was tracked by observatories around the world as it happened. The astronauts also left mirror-like reflectors on the surface.
Aim a laser at one, time the round trip, and you get the Earth–Moon distance to within a few centimeters. The math behind it is almost embarrassingly simple — light travels at a known speed, so distance is just speed times time, halved for the round trip.
