Nonviolence and Science: What Freud, Gandhi, and a Forgotten Physicist Reveal About the Logic of Peace
Can a single word — no — hold the key to ending cycles of violence? It sounds too small to matter. What Did Freud Discover in a Single “No”?
In 1925 Freud published a short paper titled “On Negation.” It’s only a few pages long, and unlike his case studies, it explains the method of psychoanalysis itself.
Freud describes a patient recounting a dream. The man hadn’t seen his mother in a long time. When she finally appears, she’s aged, sour, and cruel — she even insults him. In the dream, there’s a knife on the kitchen table. He reaches for it. Then the patient adds, unprompted: “But I did not want to kill my mother.”
Catch that “not” in mid-air, Freud instructs the analyst — and add another one: “It is not true that he did not want to kill his mother.” That doubly negated sentence, Drago explains, opens the door to the patient’s buried trauma. The linguistic negation mirrors a psychic one: the repressed wish surfaces in sleep, and the waking mind slams the lid back down with a “no.”
Here’s the leap that matters for us. Drago extends Freud’s move to conflicts between people. Someone attacks you; your mind says “enemy,” a pure negativity. Freud’s method suggests answering that negativity with another negation: “It is not true that this person is my enemy.” That double negation doesn’t declare the attacker a friend. It pushes you to dig, to search for a point of contact, to propose dialogue. Responding with your own negativity — “I’ll destroy him” — forges one more link in a chain of reciprocal violence. Do Two Negations Always Make an Affirmation?
“Two negatives make a positive.” We’ve all heard the rule. Is it always true? No — and the exceptions carry enormous weight.
Take a courtroom. A judge acquits a defendant for “insufficient evidence of guilt.” Two negations sit inside that phrase, yet the verdict does not affirm the defendant’s honesty. It says the court couldn’t gather enough proof to decide either way. During Italy’s Tangentopoli corruption scandals, politicians loved the line “nobody has proof of my guilt” — a sentence the public, applying the usual rule, misread as a declaration of innocence.
Mathematical logic caught up with this intuition in the second half of the twentieth century. Researchers established that logic itself is not unique. There is classical logic, where True and False stand in mirror opposition and a double negation returns you to the starting point. And there are non-classical logics, where True and False are not sharply opposed, and two negations do not add up to an affirmation.

Is “Nonviolence” Itself a Double Negation?
Now look closely at the word “nonviolence.” Gandhi disliked it and searched for a substitute — it felt too close to passivity. The Italian philosopher Aldo Capitini (1899–1968), often called the Italian Gandhi, was bothered by that initial “non,” which smelled of confrontation to him.
Both, Drago argues, missed something. Compare two phrases. “Don’t eat”: eating is positive, so this is a single negation, a plain prohibition. “Don’t do violence”: violence is already negative, so the phrase carries two negations. “Nonviolence” is a double negation in disguise.
And do those two negations affirm? They don’t. No affirmative word can replace “nonviolence” while preserving its meaning. Even Gandhi’s own coinage, Satyagraha (“firmness in truth”), says less than the double negation does. Precisely by affirming nothing, “nonviolence” pushes us to search.
Drago offers a beautiful test case. Mexican activists translated “nonviolence” as “It is possible!” — a courageous cry in front of a brutal dictatorship. Yet the affirmative form has a hidden weakness: it implies the way out already exists, that someone has found it, just not me. That thought can breed discouragement. The doubly negated version — “It is not impossible!” — hits differently. It involves you directly, even when nobody yet sees the exit. It expresses the creative spirit of nonviolence: the search for something not given in advance.
Capitini, for his part, left us a precious clue. In a desperate conflict, he said, the nonviolent person must bring an “addition” — a smile, a generous or simply unexpected act that reopens the situation. Drago found that very word, with that very role, inside science: in the analysis and mechanics of Lazare Carnot and in Galois’s group theory. Did Gandhi Reason in a Different Logic?
For roughly thirty years, Drago has examined scientific and literary texts through this lens. His most recent test subject: Gandhi himself, and specifically Hind Swaraj — the 1909 pamphlet the British kept banning, the “little red book” of the Indian revolution.
Drago admits he expected a muddle. Gandhi never grasped the logical structure of the word “nonviolence,” and Indian tradition happily blends many ways of thinking. Instead, the chapter on “passive resistance” turned out to reason coherently in non-classical logic — double negations everywhere, and conclusions drawn by reductio ad absurdum, the argument form that rigorous non-classical reasoning requires.
A few examples from the pamphlet’s pages 91–95, as cited by Drago: “If the history of the universe had begun with wars, not a single man would be alive today.” “He who wounds by the sword perishes by the sword.” “Do you believe a coward could ever disobey a law he dislikes?” Each argument runs its opponent into an absurdity instead of asserting a positive certainty.
The implication is striking. When Gandhi took the Sanskrit word ahimsa — “do no harm,” another double negation — and set it at the foundation of religion and politics, he wasn’t just launching a political revolution. He taught the world to reason in a direction entirely different from the Western one. His actions looked stupefying to observers, Drago suggests, exactly since those observers were still thinking in classical logic.
Is Physics a Violent Science?
Here’s where our story turns toward home ground: physics. Don’t worry — high-school physics only, and a single example. The first principle of mechanics, the principle of inertia.
Newton states it in the Principia (London, 1687, p. 10): every body at rest, or in uniform straight-line motion, perseveres in its state until a force changes it. We’ve all repeated it without a flicker of doubt. Drago asks us to slow down and actually read it.
First, “every body.” Experimental physics never works with “every body”; it works with this body, on this bench. A claim about all bodies everywhere sounds less like physics and more like metaphysics. Second — and this is the heart of it — “perseveres.” Perseverance belongs to morality. A stone is inanimate. How can it persevere?
There is another way to say the same physics. Lazare Carnot — geometer, mathematician, physicist, organizer of France’s mass conscription and architect of the defensive victory of 1793 — wrote in his Principes fondamentaux de l’équilibre et du mouvement (Paris, 1803, p. 49): once a body is at rest, it does not move by itself; once it is in motion, it changes neither speed nor direction by itself.

Same physics, different words — and the difference is not cosmetic. “Change” and “move” are the negative words of theoretical physics: a change demands an explanation, poses a problem, challenges the physicist. Carnot’s version is built from two doubly negated sentences. Try to collapse them into their affirmative equivalent and what do you get? “Perseveres.” Newton’s word. Peace researcher Johan Galtung distinguishes three types of violence: direct (personal), structural, and cultural — where cultural violence is what justifies the structural kind. Drago pushes the idea one step further: cultural violence reaches its maximum when it monopolizes truth.

The eleventh-century Church monopolized spiritual life — recall the persecutions of Peter Waldo for reading the Gospel in the vernacular, of Fra Dolcino, Giordano Bruno, Savonarola, Joan of Arc.
