The Machine In My Head Never Told Me Who I Was

Four centuries of philosophy, one implanted device, and the stubborn fact that intelligence breathes.

Hobbes got there first. Thinking is calculating.

He wrote it with the bluntness that makes him quotable, the man who gave us Leviathan, and he wasn’t working alone — Bacon and Descartes were circling the same idea in the same century. Reasoning, on that account, is reckoning. A sum carried out in the head, nothing stranger than that.

Four hundred years later, that one sentence underwrites the most expensive industry on the planet.

A Seventeenth-Century Idea In New Clothing

The claim can be read several ways. We’re going to read it the way the twenty-first century reads it, because that reading is the one selling hardware: that human thought works the way a computer works.

The idea has real purchase inside the scientific communities studying cognitive systems, living and silicon alike. It has enormous purchase outside them, among a public dazzled by what these systems do and worked on relentlessly by marketing that has no interest in careful distinctions.

Call the position computational functionalism. Before arguing with it, we should be honest about why it’s attractive. It’s clean. It’s testable. It converts the most confusing thing in the universe into an engineering problem, and engineering problems get solved.

That’s exactly what makes it worth slowing down over.

Three Reductions, Stacked

My hypothesis is that the assimilation of mind and computer rests on three reductions, each one reasonable-looking on its own, each one resting on the last.

The first happens at the level of the phenomenology of thought — what thinking is like from the inside. Thought gets redescribed as information processing. Whatever else is going on when you understand a joke, or grieve, or change your mind about someone you’ve known for twenty years, we agree to treat it as data in, data out.

The second happens in neuroscience. Cognition gets redescribed as neural computation. Neurons fire, signals propagate, and the brain becomes a device that computes.

The third happens in computer science. Neural computation gets redescribed as an algorithm — a finite sequence of steps a machine can run.

Follow the chain and you arrive exactly where the chain was always heading. Thinking is calculating, Hobbes was right, and the only difference between you and a server rack is substrate and scale.

I’ve simplified all three steps for you here, and I want to say so plainly rather than pretend otherwise. Each has a serious literature behind it, defended by people far more careful than the marketing departments now quoting them.

Here’s what troubles me. Every reduction throws something away, and the discarded remainder never gets audited. By step three, nobody remembers what went missing in step one.

The Machine In My Head

I should be specific about why none of this is abstract for me.

In 2011 I had a deep brain stimulation device implanted: electrodes threaded into the brain, a pulse generator under the skin, a small continuous current sent to quiet a movement disorder called dystonia. In 2018 it came out. In between there was more surgery, more recovery, and more time spent horizontal than I had budgeted for.

The day they switched it on, a technician sat beside me with a programmer unit, adjusted a parameter, waited. Adjusted it again. My body answered before I did — a shoulder dropped, and a hand that had been arguing with me all morning went quiet. Then he asked how I felt, and I had to stop and work out the answer, which struck me even then as the interesting part.

There it was. A computer, wired directly into the tissue that everyone insists does the computing, changing the output in real time. It moved the machine. It never moved the me. Seven years of current, and the current never once introduced itself.

(This proves nothing philosophically, and I know it.)

What it did was end my sense that the mind-as-computer story is obvious. It’s a hypothesis wearing the costume of a discovery.

What Every Language Guessed Instead

My conviction — humble, and offered as conviction rather than proof — is that the biblical tradition, and a philosophy critically inspired by Thomas Aquinas, help us see human intelligence as rooted in life, and specifically in our bodily condition. Getting to an anthropology that actually holds together means tracing the soul forward from Plato’s Socratic Phaedo.

Start with the words themselves, because the words remember things we’ve forgotten.

Plato derived the Greek psyché from anapneîn, “to breathe”, or from anapsycho, “to cool”, “to dry” — see Cratylus, 399e. Aristotle traced the root instead to katápsyxis, “cooling”, in De Anima, I, 2, 405b. Origen borrowed the same image when he described the primordial fall of human spirits as a cooling of a purely spiritual reality, in De Principiis, II, 8.

The nearest Hebrew equivalent is nefes, tied directly to breath and to the throat. The Latin anima descends from the Greek anaigma, “bloodless”, or more likely from ánemos — wind, breath.

German Seele and English soul come from Old High German saiwolò, linked to the Greek aiólos, meaning “agile” and also “self-moving”: a word for an intrinsic principle of motion. And the Sanskrit Atman, from the Indian tradition of the Rig-Veda, also means breath, surviving into modern German as atmen, to breathe.

Now notice what’s absent.

Not one of these traditions guessed calculating. They guessed breathing. Cooling. Moving yourself from the inside. Across virtually every historical period, every civilisation, every philosophical anthropology and every religion, the concept turns up in some form — Eliade, 1993 — and it never once arrives as arithmetic.

That’s not an argument. It’s a data point about what human beings recognise in themselves when they look, and it runs the opposite way from Hobbes.

Nobody Has Ever Been Able To Say What It Is

Philosophers have always known the soul resists rigorous description, and the honest ones said so.

Aquinas observed that “knowing what the soul is is a very difficult thing” — De Veritate, q. 10, a. 8, ad 8um. He added that such knowledge “requires diligent and careful inquiry”, in Summa Theologiae, I, q. 87, a. 1.

I find that admission more useful than most confident answers. A man who spent his life on the question reports that the question is hard. Compare that to the tone of a product launch.

Two Camps, Four Centuries, No Winner

Run through the history and two opposed readings of the human soul separate out cleanly enough to name.

The first, spiritualist in the loose sense, gathers Pythagoras, Plato, Plotinus, Augustine, Descartes and Leibniz, whatever else divided them. It hands the soul an enormous portfolio — self-awareness first, then self-transcendence, then freedom, then our sheer talkativeness towards each other, and from there culture and everything we make. It tends towards a dualist anthropology: two things, somehow joined.

The second gathers Epicurus, Lucretius, Comte, Marx and Engels. It sits more comfortably with strictly positive and empirical discourse, and it tends towards monism — one thing, described well enough.

Some, Aquinas among them, worked to synthesise the two. That’s the harder road, and it’s the one worth walking, because both camps are holding something real and neither will let go of it just because the other shouts.

Notice, though, that computational functionalism isn’t a third option. It’s the materialist wing with better engineering.

The Word Science Stopped Saying

In scientific work, talk of the soul — an invisible, immaterial, unifying element at the core of a person — has been treated with suspicion for a long time, and not without cause.

Physics, chemistry, biochemistry, biology and experimental psychology watched the term decline, and in some measure caused the decline. What survived was reserved for symbolic or poetic use, the way you’d keep a beautiful instrument nobody plays.

The turn in recent decades is the part that interests me. Some scientists have started recognising the concept’s usefulness again, precisely because the so-called mind-body problem refuses to close. The word came back through the door marked unfinished business.

So, What Are We Actually Asking?

The question of artificial intelligence isn’t only technological, and it isn’t only philosophy of mind. It reopens something older and more uncomfortable: what does it mean to think? And underneath that, what does it mean to be human?

Reduce thought to calculation, intelligence to information processing, cognition to an algorithm, and we lose sight of the vital, bodily, spiritual roots of the thing we were trying to explain. We don’t refute those roots. We just stop looking at them, which in practice works out the same.

So reflection on AI becomes an opening rather than a threat — a chance to return to a wider view of the person. Not a thinking machine. A living being: bodily, spiritual, relational, open to meaning. On that ground, the biblical tradition and a philosophy critically inspired by Aquinas have something decisive to contribute to an integral anthropology, and I don’t say that as a concession to piety. I say it because the alternative account has a hole in it exactly where the body should be.

Which brings me back to the wind.

I write from the Adriatic coast, and the wind here has a temperature and a salt smell and a habit of arriving before you’ve decided to notice it. Anima. Ánemos. Breath. Every tradition that ever tried to name the inner principle of a person reached for moving air, and every one of them was reaching for something that happens in a body or not at all.

Mine argues with me most mornings. It has since 1991, when my family brought me from Albania to Italy for treatment, and it argued through the implant and through the removal and it’s arguing now while I type this. It has never handed me an answer. What it hands me, every single day, is the question again — and the strength to pick it up again.

That’s not computation. That’s a life asking what it is.
