Why Do We Celebrate International Moon Day on July 20?

On July 20, 1969, two men parked a spidery lander on a dusty plain called the Sea of Tranquility and climbed down onto another world. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked the surface while Michael Collins circled overhead in the Columbia command module. Fifty-seven years later, that afternoon has a place on the United Nations calendar.

That day is International Moon Day, and the Moon it celebrates in 2026 looks nothing like the one Apollo left.

The short answer: International Moon Day is a UN commemoration held every July 20, the anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing. The General Assembly proclaimed it on December 9, 2021, after a proposal from the Moon Village Association. The 2026 edition runs July 1 to October 31, with the main event in Bogotá, Colombia.

A UN day for the first Moon landing

International Moon Day is an annual United Nations commemoration held on July 20 to mark the first human landing on the Moon, Apollo 11 in 1969. The General Assembly proclaimed it on December 9, 2021, in Resolution A/RES/76/76, building on a recommendation from the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS).

The mandate is to educate and inspire, and to raise awareness of sustainable lunar exploration. The resolution celebrates the achievements of all States that have explored the Moon, not one flag.

The idea came from the Moon Village Association, a non-governmental group that promotes public-private cooperation for lunar work. It brought the proposal to the 64th session of COPUOS, which endorsed it and passed it to the General Assembly for the December 2021 vote. The association now runs the celebration through its International Moon Day Group.

Why the date is July 20

July 20 honors the first time humans landed on another world. On that day in 1969, Apollo 11 set Armstrong and Aldrin on the surface while Collins waited aboard Columbia in orbit.

Lunar exploration started earlier. The first human-made object to reach the Moon was the Soviet probe Luna 2, which struck the surface in 1959 — a full decade before any boot print. Missions from the United States, Russia, Europe, Japan, China, India, and Israel have deepened what we know about the Moon since.

How the 2026 edition works

The 2026 edition runs four months, from July 1 to October 31, with events in dozens of cities: Sri Lanka, South Africa, India, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Spain, Japan, and Brazil. The main event is in Bogotá, Colombia.

It rests on two pillars:

  1. The Main Event, a central gathering with expert talks and keynotes.
  2. The Global Events, a worldwide network of activities run by governments, agencies, institutions, and the public, in person or online.

NASA’s Ignition plan for a lunar base

Ignition is the plan NASA administrator Jared Isaacman presented on March 24, 2026, and it rewrites the agency’s priorities. The model shifts from isolated missions flown every few years to a rolling commercial program that builds infrastructure for a permanent human presence on the surface.

It arrives on prepared ground. Artemis I flew uncrewed in 2022. Artemis II circled the Moon on April 1, 2026, carrying Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canada’s Jeremy Hansen; we followed that flight in our Artemis II mission guide. With Ignition, the Moon stops being a place you visit and becomes a place you equip.

The centerpiece is a Moon Base at the lunar south pole, planned from the start as a semi-commercial outpost rather than a government project. The candidate site is the Shackleton Connecting Ridge, a crest on the slopes of Shackleton crater. Two things make it valuable: near-constant sunlight for power, and nearby craters holding water ice.

Private industry carries the load. Blue Origin will supply Blue Moon Mark 1 heavy landers for the main cargo. Astrolab and Lunar Outpost each won NASA contracts worth more than 200 million dollars for crewed and uncrewed lunar vehicles, due by 2028. Some missions already carry payloads from ESA and the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute.

NASA now places the first crewed Artemis landing no earlier than 2028, with Artemis III planned for mid-2027; from there, astronauts transfer from the Orion capsule to a commercial lander to reach the surface. The stated goal is one landing every six months early on, settling into one a year, with companies eventually flying their own missions. Curious how we got from 1972 to here? China’s sprint to the same pole

China is racing toward the same pole. After Chang’e 5 returned near-side samples in 2020 and Chang’e 6 did the same from the far side in 2024, the China National Space Administration is preparing Chang’e 7 for the south pole, hunting water ice with a lander and rover, plus a small hopper — a scout that flies between permanently shadowed craters in the Moon’s low gravity.

The declared target is a crewed Chinese landing by 2030, with candidate sites already picked in the Rimae Bode region. The robotic missions and the future crew converge on one project: the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS), a base China and Russia mean to build with other partners by the mid-2030s. The planned site is Shackleton crater, the same one NASA chose.

Nobody owns the Moon, and that’s the gap

Nobody owns the Moon, and both blocs agree on that much. The Outer Space Treaty of 1967, ratified by more than 110 countries, forbids any state from claiming a celestial body. It was written in the Cold War to stop the space race from turning into a land grab, and it stays the only shared reference for human expansion toward the Moon and Mars.

The trouble is what the treaty leaves out. It says almost nothing about resource extraction, about interference between missions, or about who gets the best sites — and at the south pole, where sunlight and water ice decide everything, the good spots are few.

The United States promoted the Artemis Accords in 2020, now signed by 68 countries. China and Russia never joined, and were never invited. Two geopolitical blocs are hardening around the same patch of lunar ground, with no shared plan between them. Whether the major space powers will cooperate is an open question; the honest answer is that nobody knows yet.

We think this legal gap is the real story of International Moon Day 2026, more than any rocket. The hardware is coming along fine. The rules are not.
