What Is Driving the Third Heatwave of Summer 2026?
A huge promontory of subtropical continental high pressure, the African anticyclone, is driving this heatwave, and it works on Italy from the inside as much as from the outside. Yes, hot Saharan air flows north across the Mediterranean. The deeper engine, though, is a mechanism called atmospheric subsidence. Inside a strong high pressure system, air slowly sinks toward the ground. As it descends, the weight of the atmospheric column above squeezes it, and this adiabatic compression warms and dries the air mass with no external heat source at all.
Repeat that compression day after day for weeks and the lower troposphere becomes a storage tank of heat: a static heat dome. That is why this episode, technically the third distinct wave of the season, feels like one endless surge that has gripped the country for almost two months. How Unusual Is 30°C at 1,500 Meters?
A reading of +30°C at about 1,500 meters is close to unheard of for summer at this latitude, and that is exactly what the charts show over Sardinia this week. Meteorologists judge the true strength of a heatwave at the 850 hPa pressure level, roughly 1,500 meters up, where the temperature of the air mass can be measured without the noise of sun-baked ground or local terrain. When the free atmosphere is already at +30°C before any surface heating, an enormous amount of thermal energy is sitting over our heads.
A quick sanity check with physics. Dry sinking air warms at about 9.8°C for every kilometer of descent, the dry adiabatic lapse rate. Take that +30°C parcel at 1,500 meters and bring it down to sea level: 30°C + (1.5 × 9.8°C) ≈ 44.7°C. That back-of-the-envelope figure lands almost exactly on the 45°C forecast for inland Sicily. The extreme peaks are not a mystery; they follow directly from the air mass aloft.
Where Will Temperatures Peak, and Which Cities Are on Red Alert?
The most extreme peaks of this wave will concentrate in the South and on the major islands, a change from the earlier episodes of the season. The single highest value, around 45°C, is expected at Catenanuova, in the province of Enna, Sicily. Sardinia follows closely: 42°C at Nuoro, 41°C on the Oristano plain, and 39 to 40°C at Carbonia and along the Cagliari coast.

Why Is a 30°C Sea Bad News?
A sea at 28 to 30°C cancels the coastline’s natural air conditioning, and that is precisely where Italian waters sit right now. Water has a very high specific heat capacity: it soaks up gigantic amounts of energy during the day and releases it with extreme slowness. At night, that warm water keeps feeding heat back into the coastal air, so temperatures simply cannot fall.

The breakdown starts from the North during the weekend of July 18 and 19, when a deep Atlantic trough loaded with cooler, unstable air punctures the northern edge of the anticyclonic dome. The first true, nationwide temperature drop is expected only from the start of next week.
What Does This Forecast Mean for You?
Think of the coming days as two distinct weather regimes, each with its own risks. Through Friday, the danger is heat itself, above all in the red-alert cities and the inland South and islands: plan physical effort for early morning, drink before you feel thirsty, and check on elderly neighbors, who suffer most during tropical nights. Do not count on an evening swim to cool you down; the water is part of the problem this year.
From Saturday, the risk flips to violent weather in the North and, in a first taste, already in the Triveneto from Wednesday evening.
