A sweeping new analysis in Nature has laid out what a global food systems transformation could mean, not just for human health and the climate, but for the very structure of agriculture itself.
Following the 2025 EAT-Lancet Commission recommendations: healthier diets, improved farm productivity, and halving food waste, could by 2050:
Cut global agricultural land use by up to 6%.
- Slash agriculture-related net COâ‚‚ emissions from land-use change by 85% compared to 2020.
- Reduce global livestock production value by 42% ($630 billion).
- Decrease ruminant production value by 70% ($274 billion), with 400 million fewer cattle, sheep, and goats worldwide.
- Boost the value of vegetable, fruit, nut, and legume production by 57% ($890 billion).
Regional Impacts
- United States: Overall production value fell 21% to $76 billion. Crops increased by 20% to $40 billion, while livestock dropped by 73% to $116 billion.
- India: Overall production value rose by 46% to $198 billion. Crops went up by 65% to $208 billion, and livestock decreased by 8% to $10 billion.
- Europe: Overall production value down 35% ($190bn), with crops down 8% ($22bn) and livestock down 66% ($168bn).
The EAT-Lancet Commission previously estimated that healthy diets could prevent 15 million premature deaths per year. Current food systems incur hidden costs of $10–20 trillion annually, largely due to unhealthy diets.

“Transforming food systems would deliver enormous potential benefits to our health and the environment but, as our results make clear, they would also lead to fundamental changes to global agriculture and affect the lives of millions of farmers and food producers.”

“We should consider these scenarios not as a forecast of what will happen, but as a useful early guide of where challenges and opportunities may arise. A transformation of this magnitude cannot begin in 2050. Foresight modeling like that highlighted in this study is a valuable tool to inform actions today.”
The study assumed that consumers could easily switch to healthy diets, but in reality, access, cost, and cultural preferences make this change difficult. The authors emphasize that strong policy choices are necessary now to help both vulnerable producers and consumers as we move towards healthier, more sustainable diets.
