Why argue about the Moon on our birthday?
Six years ago, in the worst stretch of the pandemic, Gerd started FreeAstroScience with one wish: hand the power of knowledge to anyone who wants it. Today the page has more than 300,000 followers on Facebook and members on every continent. (Still no Australian. We’re working on it.)
So why spend the party on a fight? Our newest teammate, Matthew — an American and a US Army veteran — watched a single Instagram short blow up into a brawl over the Moon. Here’s the twist most people miss. Few of the doubters claim humans can’t reach the Moon. They accept the robots and the rovers. What they reject is the part where crews actually stood on it in the 1960s.
That belief is everywhere — abroad and inside the United States too. One fellow at a barbecue told Matthew the Space Station itself is fake, just a weather balloon. So we sat down with Flavia in Brazil and Gerd in Italy and worked through it, point by point.
Short answer: Yes, humans landed on the Moon. Six crewed Apollo missions, twelve astronauts on the surface, between 1969 and 1972. The proof you can’t wave away: orbiters from the United States, India, China, and South Korea have all photographed the abandoned Apollo hardware — and some of those nations had no reason to do America any favours.
Who actually photographed the Apollo landing sites?
For Matthew, this is the whole ballgame. A staged photo from NASA proves little on its own. A photo from a country that isn’t America’s friend? That’s a different animal.
Start at home. NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter caught the Apollo 11 site from orbit. You can trace Neil Armstrong’s footpath to little West Crater, pick out the lunar module descent stage, and even spot the seismometer and camera the crew left behind.
Now leave home. India’s Chandrayaan program tried first — Chandrayaan 1 couldn’t resolve the gear, but Chandrayaan 2 imaged the Apollo 11 Eagle descent stage. India sits neutral with the United States: not enemies, not best friends, and it publishes its data openly, the way NASA does. China’s second lunar probe reported traces of the Apollo sites and a rover, though China keeps most of that imagery locked up. South Korea’s Danuri orbiter, launched in 2022, photographed both the Apollo 11 and Apollo 17 sites sharply enough to spot the landers.
Four space programs, several of them with zero interest in propping up an American story, all point their cameras at the same dust and find the same hardware sitting there.

Why can’t the Moon rocks lie?
Apollo crews carried home 382 kilograms — about 842 pounds — of lunar material across those six landings. Labs on different continents have studied it for decades. The stone tells the same story every single time.
You can doctor a photograph in an afternoon. Faking 382 kilograms of real Moon rock that survives independent testing in lab after lab, country after country? That’s a whole different order of trouble.
Can you really bounce a laser off the Moon?
There’s a mirror up there, and you can ping it. The Apollo crews left mirror-like reflectors on the surface, and observatories still fire lasers at them today.
The trick is simple to picture. Send a pulse of light, time how long it takes to come back, and the round trip hands you the Earth–Moon distance.
How the distance falls out
Distance = (speed of light × round-trip time) ÷ 2. The pulse races to the Moon and back in roughly 2.5 seconds. Halve that, multiply by light’s speed, and you land on the average gap of about 384,400 kilometres — measured to within centimetres.
Can you check any of this yourself?
Here’s the part we care about most. You don’t have to trust us, or NASA, or anyone. You can look.
A backyard telescope won’t show you a footprint or the Eagle descent stage — that hardware is far too small from here. If the proof is this strong, why do people still doubt?
We didn’t want to dodge this. The doubt isn’t really about cameras and rock. It’s about trust.
Flavia put it plainly from Brazil: there’s no single consensus, just a swirl of theories with little evidence behind them. The Cold War gave America a powerful motive to look like a winner, and big institutions have been caught bending the truth before. Stack those together and a person grows jaded. Why believe this, the thinking goes, when so much else turned out to be spin?
The strange part is that the conspiracy runs both ways. One viewer told us the opposite — that we went to the Moon more often than anyone admits. That’s the “Solar Warden” story: a secret fleet, quiet trips that never stopped, even handshakes with aliens, all hidden from the rest of us. Same distrust, pointed in the other direction.
So where does that leave a science page on its birthday? With a job. If half the public doubts a Moon landing, part of the fix is institutions earning trust back — and part is people like us explaining things clearly instead of rolling our eyes. Dismissing a sincere question as “stupid” teaches no one. We’d rather look someone in the eye, weigh the claim, and walk through the evidence together.
